Foursquare Soars Thanks to Facebook Places

When Facebook Places, the long-awaited location-based mobile piece of the social Goliath, arrived the other week, the tech and mainstream media alike was a-buzz about the "Foursquare killer." Only thing is Facebook had already said that Places would integrate data from the likes of Foursquare and Gowalla — executives from those services were actually at the public launch. Dave Marsey, senior vice president of media at Digitas, wisely suggested that although Facebook was bringing massive scale (the polite term for 500 million users) into the space, it wasn't going to slay Foursquare and other networks, but lead the path ahead for mobile social.

Local Onlline Ad Sales Forecast to Grow in 2011

Borrell Associates is forecasting a moderate increase in overall ad spending for 2011, but continued strong growth for online advertising, including mobile. Overall, advertisers will increase their spending next year by less than 5% above this year's projected level, bringing U.S. ad spending totals to $238.6 billion.

That's up 30% vs. a year ago but down 30%-33% from the prior two periods.

Report Stresses Value of Local Media Websites

Just five years ago, the Internet, or World Wide Web as we knew it represented 13.3% of a prospective new car buyer's total time spent exposed to all media in a typical day.  Today, information from The Media Audit reveals that figure has grown to 36.8%, and it has now eclipsed the amount of time a new car buyer will spend listening to radio, watching TV, reading a newspaper, or driving by a billboard.  A similar story can be told for all U.S. adults. In 2005, the Internet represented just 12.7% of a consumer's daily exposure to media, but today, it represents 34.3%.

A revised forecast out today from BIA/Kelsey predicts radio's 2010 over-the-air revenues will rise 4.4% from last year, to $13.93 billion. Another $459.3 million in revenues is forecast to come from the digital and online spaces.
