Trying to time your advertising placement to the economy is very much like trying to time your investment decisions with the stock market. It is very risky. History shows the best dividends go to the consistent long term investor. Consistency works much the same way in advertising. History shows the best business results accrue to the consistent advertiser.

Most of us work in a very competitive environment where there is continuous pressure to commoditize our products and services and make us compete on price alone. This can be very discouraging and over time it is possible to lose one's enthusiasm and eventually lose the battle and succumb to selling a commodity on price alone.

One of the most amazing sales people I ever worked with was Terry Burford at KFDI in Wichita Kansas. There are many things about Terry that impress me but for this story, I’m going to stick with his selling and customer service techniques because it could be helpful for anyone in Radio sales who wants to make more money.

Sales is a relationship business. People buy from people that they like sooner than they will buy from someone they don't like. Are you the type of person the prospect likes because you are professional and well prepared or do they like you because you bring them doughnuts and tell funny jokes. People admire professionalism. They will buy from the professional sales person they like sooner than they will buy from the unprofessional sales person they like because the professionalism enhances the sense of value in the transaction.

From an accountant’s point of view, advertising is not an investment. Advertising is an expense. The cost of advertising is an operating expense. It is listed right there on the company’s profit and loss statement. Advertising is not listed on the company’s balance sheet.

Hanging on to your current customer base is one of the most critical components for ongoing business success. The cost of acquiring a new customer varies from business to business but in many cases, that new customer cost can often exceed the net profit from the first sale. To achieve a positive Return on Investment, you must engage with that new customer and develop a relationship that leads to more sales opportunities. In other words, you must develop that new customer into a repeat customer.

That will never work they said. Who wants to watch the news 24 hours a day, seven days a week? "There isn't that much news to talk about" they said. HBO wasn't even a 24 hour channel. But that didn't stop the 42 year old entrepreneur Ted Turner as he proudly launched the Cable News Network at 5:00 p.m. EST on Sunday June 1, 1980.

You have a prospect who tells you that they are going to start using Facebook to market their business. They might be an existing customer that is going to cancel or it’s a new prospect that you’re trying to sell for the first time. You are frustrated because the prospect is so excited about the potential of Facebook marketing that they are going to forsake traditional media. The prospect is really sold on the idea because since they started their Facebook marketing campaign, they now have a few hundred “friends” or people who “like” their page. But that’s about as far as it’s going to go without you and your Radio station’s help.
